Why do we make bowls?
That is because I feel the spiritual crystals that the Japanese have spun there. Pottery is an epoch-making technology that human beings first devised in the sense that it creates things from scratch rather than scraping or combining original things like stone tools. Since then, people have designed it and created various pottery all over the world. Pottery is the earliest work of art in human history.
In Japan, pottery peculiar to Japan was produced from the Jomon period, and then it began to be influenced by the continent during the Yayoi, Nara, and Heian periods. Then, in the Azuchi-Momoyama period, which was called the Warring States period of Japan, Japan’s unique culture of feeling the infinite universe in a small bowl that fits in the palm of your hand was nurtured under various historical backgrounds. Japanese thoughts and culture, such as Wabi-Sabi, have matured during this period. From a global artistic perspective, it is no exaggeration to say that the tea bowls produced during the Azuchi-Momoyama period were the first contemporary art produced in the history of Japanese art.
In today’s society, where the world situation is changing rapidly, the production of bowls that are close to people’s hearts and give them a sense of the future is a central activity of our creation.
